Scientists have discovered caffeine stimulates the growth of tiny follicles in the scalp in men who are starting to lose their hair. But drinking 60 cups a day of coffee to reach the significant amount of caffeine at follicles in the scalp may not be the best answer. Alpecin, a German cosmetic firm, has developed a caffeine-rich solution that may help hair growth by rubbing it on the scalp. [1]
Researchers believe that high levels of testosterone will lead to high levels of dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Too much DHT shrinks the follicles, the hair becomes thinner and grows for less time than normal. This results in hair loss or baldness. [1]Dr. Fischer TW and co-workers from Friedrich-Schiller-University, Germany. cultivated hair follicles from male androgenetic alopecia patients for 120-192 h in vitro containing different concentrations of testosterone and/or caffeine. They found growth suppression in hair follicles treated with 5 microg/ml testosterone, while this growth suppression was counteracted by caffeine. And, treatment of these follicles with caffeine alone led to a significant stimulation of hair follicle growth. [2]
