Coconut Oil Side Effects
Coconut oil is used as a part of a diet to induce hypercholesterolemia (high cholesterol level) in animal models.
Ghosh R and co-workers from Bharati Vidyapeeth's College of Pharmacy included 2% w/w cholesterol, 1%w/w
sodium cholate and 2.5% w/w coconut oil in the normal diet to induce hypercholesterolemia in normal rats. [Int J
Ayurveda Res. 2010 Jul;1(3):159-62.] Artinger S and co-workers from Charité-Campus Benjamin Franklin,
Germany, fed two pigs with a 2% cholesterol and 17% coconut fat diet to induce high cholesterol conditions. [Can J

Feoli AM and co-workers from Instituto de Ciências Básicas da Saúde, Brazil, fed rats with commercial diet or diets
containing 5% or 20% soybean oil or 20% coconut oil with or without 1% cholesterol. They found that the highest
serum levels of cholesterol and triacylglycerols were observed in the group fed coconut oil and cholesterol.
Triacylglycerol, high-density lipoprotein, and total cholesterol serum levels increased with diet containing coconut

Health Organization found reduction of total fat in human subjects could be simply achieved by reducing the

Repeated heating of vegetable oils at high temperatures during cooking is a very common cooking practice.
Repeated heating of edible oils are known to generate a number of compounds, including polycyclic aromatic
hydrocarbons, some of them are carcinogenic. Srivastava S and co-workers from Indian Institute of Toxicology
Research concluded that dietary consumption of repeatedly heated coconut oil can cause a genotoxic and

Harris DL and co-workers from Meharry Medical College, TN, found that dietary fat, especially saturated fat, (as
peanut or coconut oil) enhanced the development of colon tumors caused by B(a)P in the Apc(Min) mouse.

Introduction
Coconut oil is an edible oil extracted from the kernel or meat of matured coconut. Coconut oil is very heat-stable,
which makes it suited to methods of cooking at high temperatures like frying. Because of its stability, it is slow to
oxidize. However, it is not wise to consume large amounts of coconut oil because of its high fat content.

Radenahmad N and co-workers from Prince of Songkla University, Thailand, suggested a potential use of young
coconut juice for preventing Alzheimer's disease in menopausal women. They thought the potential benefit might be
related to its oestrogen-like components. β-amyloid deposition was found to related with ovx rats taking coconut

Verallo-Rowell VM from Skin and Cancer Foundation, Pasig, Philippines, demonstrated that virgin coconut oil might
be beneficial for mammals suffered from atopic dermatitis, as it might have antibacterial effects. [Dermatitis. 2008

Coconut milk may have health benefits on certain GI conditions. Mehlhorn H and co-workers from Heinrich Heine
University Düsseldorf, Germany, stopped gastrointestinal helminthic infections in sheep by feeding them with a
combination of specially prepared extracts of onion (Allium cepa) and coconut (Cocos nucifera) for 8 days.

coconut milk showed a protective effect on the ulcerated gastric mucosa in a rat study. [Phytother Res. 2008 Jul;22
