Accutane Indication
Isotretinoin is a retinoid, which when administered in pharmacologic dosages of 0.5 to 1.0 mg/kg/day, inhibits
sebaceous gland function and keratinization. Clinical improvement in nodular acne patients occurs in association
with a reduction in sebum secretion. Accutane is indicated for the treatment of severe recalcitrant nodular acne.
Nodules are inflammatory lesions with a diameter of 5 mm or greater. The nodules may become suppurative or
hemorrhagic.

Accutane Side Effects, Risk and Warning
Accutane side effects are serious and many. According to product insert, Accutane must not be used by female
patients who are or may become pregnant. There is an extremely high risk that severe birth defects will result if
pregnancy occurs while taking Accutane. Accutane may also lead to side effects of depression, psychosis and,
rarely, suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, suicide, and aggressive and/or violent behaviors. Further, Accutane
has been associated with a number of cases of pseudotumor cerebri (benign intracranial hypertension), some of
which involved concomitant use of tetracyclines. Concomitant treatment with tetracyclines should therefore be
avoided.

There have been post-marketing reports of erythema multiforme and severe skin reactions [eg,
Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS), toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN)] associated with isotretinoin use. These
events of side effects may be serious and result in death, life-threatening events, hospitalization, or disability.

Accutane side effects may further include pancreatitis, high lipid profiles, hearing impairment, hepatotoxicity,
inflammatory bowel disease. Accutane may also alter bone mineral density and use of accutane may lead to a
high prevalence of skeletal hyperostosis, premature epiphyseal closure, corneal opacities, decreased night
vision and vision impairment. For details, users must review the product insert or consult with their medical
doctors.

Accutane Lawsuit
Because of many reports and lawsuits from people that claim to have been injured by Accutane, the drug was
recalled by Roche in June of 2009. Since that time, Accutane has not been available in the United States.

In May of 2007, a New Jersey jury of Accutane lawsuit found that Roche Holding AG failed to adequately warn a
patient of the bowel disease risks associated with the drug and awarded him $2.5 million in damages. [3]

In 2008, the drug giant Roche has been ordered to pay a $7 million verdict to man who had to have his colon
removed after taking the popular acne medication Accutane. This is the second loss for Roche in as many trials
for Accutane. Roche faced over 400 lawsuits alleging that Accutane caused Crohn's disease at that time. [1]

In February 18, 2010, a New Jersey court granted a 38 year-old man, a verdict of $25.16 million against Roche
for side effects caused by Accutane. The drug caused this man to lose his colon and he needs to go to the
bathroom 10 to 20 times a day. [4]

In April 8, 2011, Hagens Berman LLP, a law firm praised a jury's verdict that ordered Roche to pay $2 million to a
woman who suffered serious gastrointestinal damage caused by Accutane. According to the news release,
Roche currently faces more than 3,000 lawsuits that involve Accutane and bowel-disease claims. [2]

Drug Lawsuits- Do you have a case?
Drug lawsuits are personal injury cases in which drug users injured after taking the drug seek compensation
from the drug manufacturer. Drug lawsuits can win settlements for affected users by proving that:

[A] An user's injuries were actually caused by taking the drug.
[B] The manufacturer knew about the severe drug side effects but they failed to disclose them to the FDA and
the general public.

Users who develop one or more of the unexpected side effect(s) will likely have a viable legal claim and will be
entitled to compensation for their injuries. Families of users who have died due to the drug side effects may
also be entitled to monetary settlements for their loss. Injured patients should meet with a personal injury
lawyer for an initial consultation. During this meeting, injured patients should be able to find out if they have a
provable case against the manufacturer. Most drug lawyers work on contingency – meaning that plaintiffs won't
have to pay for legal services until (or, in some cases, unless) they win a settlement. Injured users should
consult with a lawyer to see if they can start a drug lawsuit and if it is better to file an individual lawsuit or join a
class action case.
