Herbs and Supplements February 24, 2009
Issue No.: 00002
______________________________________________________
I have reviewed a few herbs. They all have been used for various chronic
diseases for many years in herbal medicine but they are not as popular as
ginseng, grape seed extracts in today's supplement industry.
Achyranthees bidentata
Polysaccharides extracted from this herb could against Lewis lung cancer
in C57BL/6 mice. high doses of these polysaccharides stimulated the
growth of the cancer in the mice.
Oldenlandia diffusa
This herb is very popular in traditional Chinese medicine. From 1992 to
1996, researchers from Loma Linda University has published at least five
articles on how Oldenlandia diffusa potentially inhibited the growth of
cancer cells, or mutagenesis.
Guarana
Guarana is an energy-booster, as it has a lot of caffeine. Guarana (Paullinia
cupana, P. crysan and P. sorbilis), a native Brazilian plant, is a climbing
plant in the Sapindaceae. Researchers from Universidade Estadual de
Maringá, Brazil, demonstrated the antidepressant-like and anxiolytic
activities of guarana seed extracts in a rat study.
Senna
The leaves and pods of the senna plant contain compounds called
hydroxyanthracene glycosides or Senna Sennoside, which are bioactive.
These glycosides stimulate the peristalsis of the colon and alter colonic
absorption and secretion resulting in fluid accumulation and expulsion.
Chronic use of anthraquinone laxatives has been blamed for the induction
of habituation and the development of colonic cancer.
Osthole
Osthole is not a herb but a chemical extracted from a Chinese herb-Cnidium
monnieri . Researchers from Gannan Medical College, China, found that
osthole suppressed inflammatory responses on nitric oxide levels in a
dose-dependent manner in a study of rats.
Honokiol
Honokiol is a sparingly water-soluble polyphenol, which is isolated from
the cones, bark and leaves of genus Magnolia. Honkiol may benefit people
at risk of cancers.
Catuaba
Researchers from University of São Paulo, Brazil have shown that Trichilia
catigua has anti-inflammatory activities as Trichilia catigua inhibited
phospholipase A2 activity in a test-tube study.
Wasabi
Wasabi (Wasabi japonica) is a popular pungent spice in Japanese meals. It
is a member of the cruciferae family and is related to cabbages. Its
potential health benefits on animals such as rats and mice at risk of various
cancers have been noticed since 1991.
peppermint and spearmint
Complaints are reported about the adverse effects of peppermint and
spearmint on male reproductive function. In a study of 48 male rats,
drinking peppermint and spearmint teas was found to affect the
follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone levels and total
testosterone levels. [4] There is also a report that excessive peppermint
consumption caused stomatitis in England. [5]
Fucoidan
Fucoidan is a sulfated (L-fucose-rich) polysaccharide isolated from the cell
walls of several types of brown seaweed, including Fucus evanescens
(brown alga in Okhotsk sea). Fucoidan may have skin protection or even
anti-aging effects.
Okra
Okra is commonly associated in Southern, Creole, and Cajun cooking since
it was initially introduced into the United States in its southern region. It
grows well in the southern United States where there is little frost.
Do you use Splenda as sugar substitutes? After you read my report, you
may go back to use sugar.
Sucralose (the key ingredient used in Splenda)
Patel RM and co-workers from Mercer University School of Medicine,
Macon, GA, reported a potential association between sucralose and
migraines. Researchers from The Albert Einstein College of Medicine. NY,
reported a patient with attacks of migraine consistently triggered by
sucralose. She also suffers from menstrually related migraine that had
been well-controlled for several months since she switched her
contraceptive from fixed estrogen to triphasic contraceptive pills. Some
attacks triggered by sucralose were preceded by aura, and she had never
experienced migraine with aura before. Withdrawal of the compound was
associated with complete resolution of the attacks.
Other Stories
Man boobs
When both the then Prime Minister Tony Blair and leader of the opposition
David Cameron were pictured enjoying the sun in the summer of 2006,
newspapers from tabloid to broadsheet passed comment on their "moobs".
Eating soy will greatly increase "man boobs" due to the phytoestrogens in
soy. [Click http://www.zhion.info/2009/01/man-boobs.html)
Coffee Cuts Stroke Risk in Women
Previous studies have shown coffee can protect against gout, memory loss,
liver disease and even some cancers. A study of 80,000 women reported
that those who consumed several cups a day were much less likely to
suffer a clot on the brain. Drinking two to three cups per day reduced risk
by 19%.
Loss of height is not a good sign
While a minor degree of height loss is usual and unlikely to be associated
with any health problems, significant height loss may indicate osteoporosis.
The resulting height loss can affect the normal functioning of the
respiratory and gastrointestinal systems, which in turn may lead to early
satiety, poor nutritional status, and weight loss.
Among seniors, an increase in the ratio of their arm span to their height --
indicating a probable loss of height -- is strongly associated with shortness
of breath and reduced lung capacity.
The loss of 2 or more inches in height during adulthood serves as a
powerful predictor of osteoporosis in the hip, and thus the risk for hip
fractures, in elderly women.
