Definition of Dextrose
Dextrose is a type of sugar; better known today as glucose; a monosaccharide or
simple sugar that is about 20% less sweet compared to cane sugar. [4]
Synonyms: D-glucose, anhydrous; dextrosol; dextrose U.S.P. anhydrous; corn
sugar; grape sugar

Uses
5% Dextrose Injection, USP - a source of water and calories and may also be used
as diluent for reconstitution of a powdered drug product packaged in a vial with a
20 mm closure. [2] SIDE EFFECTS: Redness or pain at the injection site may occur.
[3] It is also used for treatment of hypoglycemia. [4]

Warning
Hypertonic solutions (>10%) may cause thrombosis if infused via peripheral veins or
via a central venous catheter. Rapid administration of hypertonic solutions may
produce significant hyperglycemia, glycosuria, and shifts in electrolytes; this may
result in dehydration, hyperosmolar syndrome, coma, and even death. [5] Discuss
