ACUPUNCTURE HELPS HEADACHE
“Acupuncture is an effective treatment for patients suffering from
tension headaches”, Dr Wolfgang Weidenhammer, Technische
Universitat, Germany, said on Friday [1]. In a study of 270 people, he
and his colleagues found that acupuncture cut the rates of
headaches by nearly half. They also observed that acupuncture was
well tolerated and improvements lasted several months after
completion of treatment. Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese therapy
that involves inserting very fine needles into the skin at specific sites
on the body. Side effects in this study include dizziness and bruising.
ABOUT ACUPUNCTURE
As early as in 1974, application of acupuncture in pain treatment has
been reported in scientific journals [2]. In 1975, Okazaki K et al,
applied electric acupuncture therapy as a treatment for migraine
headache. Excellent responses were found in 15 out of 20 patients.
[3] Also in 1975, Cheng AC reported that acupuncture was effective in
treating headaches. The location in this study included body loci and
ear points. Domal, a Polish scientist, called his acupuncture therapy
as needle therapy, because he injected sodium chloride into the
painful points. [4] In 1976, Spoerel WE et al recruited 200 patients
who suffered from chronic pain syndromes of at least one year
duration. They performed a course of 10 daily acupuncture
treatments to them. They observed that acupuncture of effective loci
and particularly ear acupuncture often caused an instantaneous
reduction or disappearance of pain. [5]
Since 1974, about 258 articles have been published on the
application of acupuncture on headache or related conditions. It
seems that acupuncture is widely accepted to the Western world.
